Baltimore VA Medical Center

10 Week Rotation 

Baltimore VA Medical Center is located in Baltimore, Maryland.

 

Throughout this rotation, I had the opportunity to develop a base of clinical knowledge and gain insight into the responsibilities of an acute-care, oncology and outpatient dietitian.

Rotation Highlights

  • Screened the electronic medical record (Computerized Patient Record System) for patients who required nutrition assessments or follow-ups

  • Assessed and charted on 8-12 patients daily with varying disease states, making nutritional recommendations for patients as needed

  • Monitored patients with nutrition-related health conditions and/or risks throughout their length-of-stay

  • Analyzed patient laboratory values and potential drug nutrient interactions

  • Spoke with patients about their dietary intake, providing nutrition education and interventions as needed

  • Charted on patients in the electronic medical record and determined follow-up dates 

  • Attended and contributed to interdisciplinary rounds with other providers

  • Completed a Healthy Teaching Kitchen segment with Veterans in the MOVE Weight Loss program 

  • Developed a minor case study on a Congestive Heart Failure patient

Loch Raven VA Medical Center

1 Week Rotation 

Loch Raven VA Medical Center is located in Baltimore, Maryland.

 

Throughout this rotation, I had the opportunity to observe and assess rehabilitation, long-term care and hospice patients.

Rotation Highlights

  • Counseled residents on proper eating and hydration practices

  • Attended daily medical and rehabilitation rounds with members of the interdisciplinary care team

  • Participated actively in plan of care meetings

  • Completed nutrition screenings and assessments on patients in rehabilitation and skill nursing facilities

Children's National Medical Center

2 Week Rotation 

Children's National Medical Center is located in Washington, D.C.

 

Throughout this rotation, I had the pleasure of assessing children and adolescents in both outpatient gastroenterology and inpatient intestinal rehabilitation.

Rotation Highlights

Fresenius Kidney Care

1 Week Rotation 

  • ​Provided nutrition education to patients and families

  • Assessed and charted on outpatient and inpatient children

  • Made day-to-day modifications to TPN formulas and calculations

  • Attended gastroenterology and intestinal rehabilitation rounds 

Fresenius Dialysis centers are hemodialysis clinics located worldwide. For my one week dialysis rotation, I rotated with Fresenius at their clinic in Rosedale, Maryland. 

 

Throughout this rotation, I had the opportunity to assess patients of all ages receiving hemodialysis. 

Rotation Highlights

  • ​Provided nutrition education to patients and families regarding a proper renal diet 

  • Reviewed laboratory values with patients and discussed dietary management of nutritionally relevant values

  • Attended a Quality Assurance meeting with my preceptor to observe the impact that outcomes have on the company 

  • Completed initial and follow-up assessment on hemodialysis patients
