VA Maryland Medical System

6 Week Rotation

The VA Maryland Medical System is comprised of three major facilities located throughout the state of Maryland. The Baltimore VA Medical Center, Perry Point VA Medical Center and Loch Raven Living Center are devoted to providing the utmost inpatient and outpatient care for our Veterans. I had the privilege of completing two weeks in each location's Food Service Department completing a variety of experiences.

  • Designed and created a theme meal for Loch Raven residents that was evaluated using a post-meal satisfaction survey

  • Involved in quality assurance processes including tray accuracy, test-trays and tray waste assessments

  • Conducted a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis on dining procedures

  • Delivered three Food Borne Illness in-services for staff

  • Completed environmental care rounds, kitchen rounds and floor rounds at each facility

  • Performed a cooking demonstration of diabetic holiday desserts for veterans in the MOVE Weight Loss Program

  • Conducted a feasibility study for new pizza crust being implemented at the facilities

  • Updated the nutrition database for the facilities to reflect current recommendations for all therapeutic and texture diets
